North of Malibu is an all instrumental Surf/Rock band from the Sonoma Coast in Northern California. It’s moniker pays homage to the many cold water surfers of NorCal, which include their own lead guitarist Proton.
Formed in 2005 by guitarist George “Proton” Boccanfuso (also a veteran of Surf music’s “first wave” fronted the Surf band “Rip Curl” in 1964), North of Malibu delivers traditional Surf music with a contemporary Rock & Roll edge. ”A clever balance of Reverb and Rock”
Last summer saw the addition of guitarist/producer Harry Gale from Route 44 Studio & veteran bassist Dann Walters. They have since rounded out the NoM roster with powerhouse drummer Eddie Reuter. This power-packed new lineup promises to deliver a fiery new album soon.
The band’s last release “Impact Zone” featured a review by the great guitar legend Dick Dale:
“The overall sound is very balanced, the drums are placed right where they should be in the mix, everyone is playing very well balanced and in perfect meter…. That is a crossing in itself…it is very difficult to get and capture a good mix in overall sound when one records. That in itself has always been my biggest pet beef, but as I listen to and enjoy this CD, it is recorded and performed so well that it brings back memories of my early surfing days… Brother Dick Dale“
Other Accolades:
- North of Malibu was voted “best musical group of the year” by the listeners of Cult Radio A Go-Go for their original tune “The Creature.”
- NoM’s rendition of the Instro-Surf classic “Out of Limits” has been featured in the soundtrack to the Brian Sitka movie: “Blood Moon Rising”, released last October.
- The band’s 2009 video “Leningrad Hodad” debuted the new Lightshow guitars for Waterstone Musical Instruments, and is viewable both on the guitar manufacturer’s page and on YouTube.
- Television placements include: The Tiki Lounge Show and The Waxfoot Surf Show.
